The road closure of the section of N72 from Oliver’s Cross to Monanimy Cross has been extended to the last week in April. Works began on the road in September last year. The €2.72 million contract was awarded to Wills Bros. The works were programmed for completion in March of this year but have been delayed by technical difficulties involving the bridge, as well as bad weather which caused flooding at the bridge.

The contractor expects to be able to open the section from Monanimy Cross to Castletownroche on March 28th.

A statement on the matter from Cork County Council this week acknowledged that the road closure had caused inconvenience to local residents and businesses but pointed out that, in the longer term when the project is complete, in addition to the recently completed section at Carrig, “access to the area will be much improved with consequent benefits to all.”

The statement concluded by saying that Cork County Council site staff would be available to update residents and businesses on progress.
