Remembering our ancestors from World War 1

Interest is growing in the World War 1 event scheduled for Fermoy on Saturday, March 7. The event will not only serve to remind us of those who died in the war, but is particularly concerned to commemorate those who survived the war and returned to Fermoy, Mitchlestown and the surrounding villages and townlands.

If you know of anyone who fought in the war and survived, the organisers, The Western Front Association, particularly look forward to welcoming you. The association will conduct research into military records. If you want to research an ancestor, to do so and to make the most of their expertise and their findings, please provide as much information as possible, such as date of birth, service number, the name of the regiment etc.

This is a great opportunity for people to reflect on those who returned from battle to a changed world where their story was not to be told and who had to, as a result, bear their burden of horror and mayhem in silence. The Western Front Association will create a dynamic wall of commemoration to honour the survivors of the war and hope that you will help them add as many names as possible to it on the day.

Every local family had some experience of the war and most knew somebody directly involved in it. This one-day event will be an opportunity to add these survivors of the war to the historical record. Military service research, remarks and talks by military historians, memorabilia and personal experiences of learning about this historical period will be the order of the day.

Fermoy’s War event takes place at the Fermoy Community Centre from 11am to 5pm. For more information, please contact Kieran Barry at (025) 32042.
