WEEK 36 - 2nd-8th SEPTEMBER, 2013

Another eight winners to report on this week for Avondhu locals in the UK.

REDVERS HAS AYR GOLD CUP FIRMLY IN HIS SIGHTS

Rockmills native and trainer Ed Vaughan recorded another two winners last week and took his second big pot handicap of the season with the admirable 5 year old Redvers (8/1).

Contesting a hot class 2 event over 7F at Ascot on September 7th, this son of Isiguru, ridden by Richard Kingscote was well away from the gate as the field split into two groups. Redvers, ridden handy in third off the far side, group-tracked Glen Moss (10/1) off a strong pace set by Trail Blaze (14/1).

Sighted travelling smoothly in his jockey’s hands to the halfway point, Redvers took closer order and challenging between Glen Moss and Shebebi (16/1), led his group at the two furlong marker. Asked now to race, Kingscote got behind his mount and taking the overall lead inside the final furlong, he had one challenger left in the shape of Gabriel's Lad (7/1), who came to his girth up the inside. That's as near as he got as Kingscote and Redvers stayed on strongly to repel the challenger by a neck at the line.

Recording his sixth and most notable win, Redvers holds an Ayr Gold Cup entry on September 21st and may show up there if his trainer is so inclined. Redvers, rated 95 here and from a good family, could also exploit a rating of just 83 on the all weather.

Ed Vaughan, winning trainer went onto say, "He needs the race to be run for him. He likes to chase the pace and for something to take him as far as possible, so that worked out well. He's in the Ayr Gold Cup and we'll have to talk about it. I've no experience of the race, but they say you want a horse who stays 7f."

Vaughan's second winner came with Adventure Seeker (9/2) in a class 5 maiden over 1m at Kempton Park on September 6th. Having only his third start, this two year old grey son of Dalakhani had to overcome a slow start in the hands of William Buick. Buick, making a sweeping move around the outside of this 12 runner field, found himself in front to the halfway point. Now controlling the pace, Adventure Seeker travelled well and kicking for home off the home bend, found himself two lengths up at the two pole.

Responding well to his jockey’s urgings, Adventure Seeker was too strong for his rivals and went on to win by one and a quarter lengths from Laugharne (20/1).

This was a nice performance and the colt must be well thought of to hold a Group 2 Royal Lodge entry. A half brother to group 3 winner Laughing Lashes, Adventure Seeker can now go onto better things.

INTRANSIGENT, UNCOMPROMISING IN FACILE WIN FOR KENIRY

Killeagh flat jockey, Liam Keniry is hard to keep off this column and he again was in cracking form with three winners last week. The most notable of these wins came aboard the Andrew Balding trained Intransigent (15/8) in a Class 3 Conditions event over 7F at Haydock on September 5th.

Having his first start at Haydock and second run at the trip, Intransigent, a four year old son of Trans Island, was sent to post a good favourite in this six-runner affair. Breaking well from an outside draw, Keniry settled his mount in fourth position off an even pace, set by Firebeam (2/1) and Silvestre De Sousa.

Travelling to the halfway point and none were going better than Keniry's mount, who now switched wide to challenge, drew ominously upsides the David O'Meara trained Set The Trend (10/1) at the two pole. With the leader Firebeam getting first run on Intransigent, it was time for Keniry to get down to business.

Now in full drive and chasing Firebeam down, it was only a matter of getting to that leader and as soon as that was achieved, Keniry and Intransigent surged clear inside the final furlong to win by four lengths.

A half brother to Balding's Listed and eight time winner Border Music, Intransigent rated 100, deserved this pot for his consistency and was recording his fourth win from 20 starts. He could well be up to winning in graded company on the back of this performance and is listed as been bought for a bargain 2000gns at Ascot Sales in 2010. He may also be an ideal candidate for Meydan this winter.

Keniry's other winners included a follow up win on Vertueux (5/2) for trainer Tony Carroll in a class 6 handicap over 1m5F at Bath on September 4th.

Winning here under the mandatory 6LB penalty, Keniry was made to work hard for this win after trying to make all the running and being headed by eventual second Walter De La Mare (9/2) inside the final furlong. Showing good resolution, Vertueux got his head back in front under a strong ride from Keniry to win by a head on the line. Still running off a low mark of 56 here, there may be a bit more to come from this eight year old grey son of Verglas, who has now won a total of seven races under rules.

Keniry's third and final winner came on the Mark Usher trained Honourable Knight (7/1) in a class 5 handicap over 2m at Kempton Park on September 6th. Runner-up on two of his last three starts, this five year son of Celtic Swing wasn't winning out of turn and he responded well to Keniry off the home turn to win eased down by one and three-quarter lengths.

A very tough and likeable sort, Honourable Knight has now won seven races and been in the first three on no less than 16 occasions.

LANE IMPERIOUS ON GODOLPHIN'S FEEDYAH

Kilworth flat jockey, Martin Lane rode another nice winner for new Godolphin trainer, Charlie Appleby in the shape of two year filly Feedyah (11/2) in a Class 2 Conditions event over 1m at Ascot on September 7th.

Having only her fourth start, dropped in class and stepping up to a mile for the first time, this daughter of Street Cry was coming here off the back of a group 3 run in Deauville, finishing 7th of 12.

With only three rivals to contend with, Lane was happy to bide his time in last position off what looked a steady pace set by Dane O'Neill on Adhwaa (9/4). A noticeable increase in pace to the halfway point had Lane travelling smoothly up the inside of runners, turning into the home straight.

Now looking for a run up the rail, Feedyah took closer order tracking Adhwaa, only a length down. Making his challenge between Hot Coffee (11/4) and Adhwaa, Lane found his run blocked and switching to the inside needed a gap to appear on the rail. In full drive, Lane got what he was looking for and drove Feedyah through a gap on the inside. With all four runners now in line with half a furlong to go, Feedyah and Lane joined and passed his three rivals just before the winning post, to go on and win by a neck on the line. A great ride by Lane and not for the first time showing he is worthy of riding anything Godolphin throw at him.

Recording her second win, Feedyah, a Darley home bred, can now go on to better things with this kind of attitude. Godolphin were winning this race for the third time in a row and Martin Lane, winning jockey went onto say "She travelled nicely and then found that gap, where she had to be really brave as she's not that big."

RIVALS NO MATCH FOR IMPRESSIVE BOP IT

Fermoy native and trainer David O'Meara had a quieter than usual week, but still recorded a winner in the shape of Bop It (4/1f) in a class 4 handicap over 6F at Haydock Park on September 6th.

Ridden by Danny Tudhope and having only his fourth start for O'Meara, this four year old son of Misu Bond was recording his fourth win in all and second at the track. Sent to post market leader in this 11-runner contest, Bop It broke well from a central draw. With the field splitting into two groups across the Haydock straight and the lone pacesetter Klynch (11/1) going off at a rate of knots, Bop It sat handy joining the near side group.

Klynch, now racing alone up the centre of the track, stole a march on his rivals and made the best of his way home chased down by the now second placed Bop It and Tudhope. Hanging left across the track under a ride from Tudhope, Bop It picked up a tiring Klynch inside the two furlong marker and if anything, was left alone and isolated, but in a clear lead.

Still hanging left and now ending up on the opposite side of the track, Tudhope had plenty in the locker and was never in any danger inside the final furlong. Only one horse Corporal Maddox (9/1) came out of the pack to chase O'Meara's charge down, but he had no answer once Bop It found that rail. A winning distance of one and three-quarter lengths was recorded at the line.

This was a striking performance by Bop It off a mark of 81 here. A half brother to group 3 sprint winner Ladies Are Forever and Stewards Cup winner Hoof It, he can now go on to better things. Andrew Turton, part-owner, went onto say "I was worried about the ground for Bop It. On the dam's side he wants firm, but the sire can handle it. I think he’ll stay a bit further."

O'NEILL'S RARE TREK TO SEDGEFIELD PAYS OFF

Castletownroche native and trainer Jonjo O'Neill added our final winner of the week with Amuse Me (2/1) taking a Class 4 Handicap Chase over 2m6F at Sedgefield on September 5th. Ridden by Tony McCoy, this seven year old son of Daylami was notching up his ninth win in total off the back off a fall when last seen over the bigger obstacles.

An admirable type, Amuse Me was only a second runner for O'Neill at the track in the last five years and it was worth noting this alone as a good guide to his chances. He made short work of his four rivals with a facile win and looked none the worse for that fall back in June. Winning off his highest mark of 107 here, Amuse Me will now have the handicapper to answer to in future events and could be penalised heavily for this.

Tony McCoy, winning jockey went onto say, "Amuse Me was here for a reason. It helped that Four Out Of Five had gone up in the weights, but my horse is limited and he'll struggle again if he goes much above 110."
