The elderly in Fermoy were set to benefit from a £1 million housing boost, with moves afoot to construct up to 30 houses for them. With 90% grant aid available, the remaining funds, it was understood, would be funded by an anonymous local businessman. This was to be the second such project undertaken by the Fermoy Geriatrics Association, who had already built in excess of 10 houses for the elderly at Mary Potter Crescent in the 1970s. It was likely the new units would cost in the region of £22,000 apiece to build. Deputy Ned O’Keeffe confirmed to The Avondhu that Cork County Council had already proposed a site at the VEC/Duntahane Road area.

Special blood donor awards were presented to a number of Avondhu area locals. Glanworth’s Larry Lawton of Chapel Hill was one of 26 recipients in the county to be recognised as a 100 time donor. While other recipients included Sgt Paddy Butler, Lynch Tce, Fermoy; Pat Curtin, Killavullen; David Fenton, Kildinan and Dan McCarthy, Ballynoe – all recognised for 50 blood donations.

The passing of the local authority increase in charges at the October 1992 Northern Division meeting saw several notable changes set to come into play for 1993. Charges on water usage saw a £5 increase to £70 annually for domestic, business premises increased to £100, hotels to £150, while metered supplies charged at £1.46 per 1,000 gallons, with a minimum charge of £105. The cost of dying didn’t escape - £75 for a single grave, £130 for a double grave. However, it was recommended that the ‘tag-a-bag’ refuse collection scheme be left untouched, though this was likely to be reviewed in 1993.

A young Mitchelstown man tragically lost his life in an apartment fire in Australia. Patrick (Pad) O’Brien, 30, was the youngest son of Paddy and Joanna O’Brien, Mountain Barracks, Mitchelstown. A past pupil at Araglin NS and St Fanahan’s College, Mitchelstown, the popular young man went on to qualify as a panel beater and had travelled extensively, to England, America and Australia.

The community of Ballygiblin bade farewell to long serving cleric, Fr Sean Terry. He arrived in Mitchelstown in June 1983 and had achieved noted success with Ballygiblin NS and the Mitchelstown Church Choir and Folk Group. A reception held in his honour, was chaired by principal of Ballygiblin NS, Jack Clancy, preceded by a special Mass celebrated by Fr Terry, with a nostalgic look back on his vocation by Fr Tom Browne CC, with assistance from Fr Pat Linehan.

The Pennyfarthing Restaurant on Main Street, Watergrasshill featured on The Avondhu. Run by proprietor Mary Kenny and her daughter Niamh, the Kenny family had carried out extensive refurbishment works on the premises and were doing ‘brisk business’. Open 7 days, a four course lunch could be availed of for a meagre £4.95. Some other highlights from the menu included sirloin steak for £6.95, breaded plaice £2.50, hamburger and chips £1.80 and apple tart and cream for just £1.20.

Castlelyons Fianna Fail Cumann held their annual dance at Pat and Mary’s Bar and Lounge, Bridesbridge. Presentations were made on the night to Michael Ahern TD and his wife Margaret, on the occasion of his ministerial appointment. The minister addressed the gathering and wished the cumann well for the future. Cllr Carey Joyce also addressed those present.

Fermoy Rugby Club secured an impressive victory over Newcastle West in the league, with coach Lance O'Riordan and captain Sean Lomasney happy with the performance.
