A series of robberies, all believed to be linked, hit the village of Castletownroche with a number of early morning raids taking place. Michael Reynolds’ Supermarket at Bridge Street was worst hit, when raiders, who had cut the phone lines, entered via the front door having removed a pane of glass and disabled the alarm. A large quantity of tobacco products, valued at some £3,500, approx £700 in cash and £800 worth of Lottery scratch cards were stolen. The local Dairygold branch was then entered, however nothing was taken here. The village curate’s house was also entered shortly afterwards, with the phone lines again being cut, however the criminals fled when the alarm system activated.

The Land Purchase Officer with Cork County Council was in discussion with several owners of derelict properties in Castlelyons. This followed a call for urgent moves to be made to secure Local Authority housing in the village, from Fianna Fail’s Cllr Carey Joyce, supported by Fine Gael’s Paul Bradford and Aileen Pyne. County manager, Des Wixted, informed the Northern Division meeting that the authority was continuing to try and find suitable sites, with a view to revamping the village with infill housing.

It was set to be the end of an era in Glanworth, with post mistress Molly Hickey retiring as post mistress, thus breaking a family tradition going back before World War 2. Having moved from the Main Street to the Green in 1978, the post office once again returned back to the main street under Molly’s stewardship. Her retirement would see the post office re-locating once again, to the back area of the supermarket run by Bernadette Flynn. Molly told The Avondhu she’d “miss dealing with all the customers who she formed relationships with over the years”.

While MC on the night, Sergeant Senan Ryan, described her as a woman who “had been a mother to some gardai and an agony aunt to more”. Moving to take up a role closer to home in the Mitchelstown station, Supt Pat Killalea commented “I have never seen her equal, as far as I’m concerned she’s second to none”.

Glanworth youngster, Billy Sheehan had his letter featured on the RTE programme ‘Mailbag’, with programme host Arthur Murphy describing that the Lahern native wanted the broadcasting company to screen some American wrestling, which had become popular in recent years. Unfortunately for Billy, and any other WWF followers, Arthur stated that the broadcaster ‘had no plans to screen wrestling’, suggesting he could tune into Sky Sports.
