Speaking to The Avondhu this week, Ian Fleming, chairman of Avondhu Tourism, expressed his admiration and thanks to those involved in Cork Rebel Week.  “While some aspects of the organization in Cork city were poor, many were excellent.  Anyone who saw the bands and the towns marching through the real capital would have been proud to be a rebel.  Great thanks must go to those in Fermoy who rolled up their sleeves and made sure that Fermoy was to the forefront.”

He commended those who put in such a huge effort for the Fermoy stand in the food hall. They were Mary Colette Sheehan for her design and Sean Lomasney and Donal O’Lochlainn for its construction. He said The Grand Hotel and Abbeyville House also deserved credit for manning the stand throughout the day and he extended thanks to the Tallaght Youth Band and Fermoy Concert Band for representing Fermoy so ably in the parade.

Mary Colette Sheehan, from Rathcormack is involved in another upcoming event. On Tuesday, November 19th , Avondhu Tourism will host a public meeting in the Palace Theatre, Ashe Quay, Fermoy at 11am.  The speaker will be Simon Wall who has been town architect to Westport for almost two decades. He is responsible for the built environment as part of the town management team.

Westport is the third largest town in Co Mayo and has an urban population of 5,543.  In recent times, incentivised through Section 23 tax designation, the impact of the ‘Celtic Tiger’ years, and through to the present day, Westport has experienced its largest building programme since Georgian times. The town has won may accolades, including three National Tidy Towns wins (2001, 2006 and 2008) and was last year assessed by the Irish Times to be the 'Best Place to Live in Ireland'. Westport has recently been designated a pilot town by the OPW as part of the Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht ‘Historic Towns Initiative’, and national 'Smarter Travel demonstration town' by the Department of Tourism, Transport and Sport. The town is a pioneer in the development of urban and rural greenways, including the award-winning 45km Great Western Greenway linking Westport and Achill Island.

Simon will discuss Westport’s development and the possibilities for Fermoy.
