With different fundraisers taking place each week, it can be hard to hone in on something different, but that it precisely what the parish of Glanworth, Ballindangan and Curraghagalla have managed to do with their 'Rear a Calf' campaign to raise money for the parish development fund.
In 2009, the parish took out a loan of €1.2million to renovate the three churches and through the generosity of the parishioners, they are meeting their payments and have 15 years left on the loan.
Fr Corkery thanked everyone who has contributed to their envelope system which has raised a lot of funds, but they need to supplement it with fundraisers.
Chairperson of the parish council Brian O'Sullivan, said that the support has been overwhelming as livestock farmers have generously volunteered to rear a calf or to give a financial donation in lieu.
The decision to run a fundraiser like this was based on the strong farming connections across the parish, but the council wanted the fundraiser to be a whole community effort. To this end they will also be running an auction, whereby people can donate items, or their services if they are trades people.
Fr Corkery praised the generosity of the parishioners, saying that something like this can bring people in the community closer together.
"It's having the effect of unifying the parish and giving people pride in their own parish. That is the real blessing, giving people a sense of value in their own parish," he told The Avondhu.
Brian O'Sullivan added that the response so far has been very uplifting, as farmers have already come on board to rear a calf. It is now his hope that more farmers will take the opportunity to help with the parish development fund, while other people from across the community can get involved when details of the auction are announced.
Anyone who is interested in taking part in the scheme or wants to find out more can contact any member of the parish council. All help, support and generosity to date has been greatly appreciated.
