Since re-opening in 2006, Rathcormac Youth Club has gone from strength to strength, expanding to accommodate the growing teenage population of the Rathcormac, Bartlemy and Kildinan areas.
Under the direction of Kathy Kearney, Ger Tobin and Bill Browne, the club, which is affiliated to Youth Work Ireland, and through the diligence and hard work of its committee, Board members and volunteers, the club hosts a variety of activities from cultural events, workshops, theatre trips, arts and crafts, lectures and day trips for members who range in age from 12 to 16.
Recent events such as a make-up artistry class, rap workshop and a visit from a reptile zoo show just how diverse a range of activities the club offers. They also enjoy cinema outings, sports events and even DVD & popcorn nights!
Among future events planned are hair braiding for girls, dance demos, lectures in first aid and health, cookery and bakery demonstrations. They are also looking forward to their end-of-season trip to Blackwater Adventure Centre in Castletownroche.
New members are always welcome to join. The youth club runs from September to June each year. The cost of membership is kept at a very affordable €5. The club convenes at 8pm each Friday in Rathcormac Community Centre and lasts an hour and a half.
It's supervised by no less than three adults each night. Parents are given details of club activities and are asked to sign a parental consent form for all trips and outings. All club volunteers, mentors and committee members are Garda vetted.
They'd welcome any parents or volunteers willing to get involved or give an hour or two of their time once a month. Further information is available from Chairman Jonathon Brackett, Secretary Lyssa Morgan, Treasurer Mary Barry, PRO Jason Biggs or Child Protection and Entertainments Officer Jean Martin.
They extend thanks to all past and current volunteers and look forward to welcoming new members to the club.
