The removal of a century old roadside water pump in Castlelyons has been the cause of some controversy in the locality - and rightly so.

Too often in the past, we have seen pumps, milestones and road signs removed for no good reason. The interesting question is - where do they end up?

It is well known that apart from the odd one that's left to languish in the corner of some council yard, such artefacts have become collector's items, many of them finding their way to far flung corners of the globe where they adorn some 'Irish pub' or other.

While we are not for one minute insinuating that this is what has happened to the pump in question, the explanation as to its whereabouts and subsequent call for its re-instatement is keenly anticipated!

Will public water pumps be removed to further brace up the water charges? These items are part of the heritage of our towns and villages and need to be preserved!
