Fianna Fail Councillor Frank O'Flynn from Glanworth, has been a councillor in the area since he was first elected in 1999. This week he told The Avondhu that he was delighted to have been re-elected, even more so with the high public vote he received.

"I got tremendous support from people in the Fermoy Electoral Area and I'm putting that down to the hard work I've done as a councillor."

He added that for his party to take three out of six seats on Cork County Council, was a result that was beyond his wildest dreams.

ISSUES

In terms of the issues he will be focussing on, Cllr O'Flynn said that the uncertainty around what the medical card review would entail was a huge source of fear for people, as he sees a review translating to mean a cutback. "I'm delighted the Government have seen the light of day, as there was a lot of unwarranted fear out there, fear of the unknown."

Roads are another big issue for people in rural areas particularly, according to Cllr O'Flynn, as he said that no matter what someone is doing in life, they need good roads in order to get to work, college or school safely and if those roads are not in a good condition, it is not fair on those people who are paying high taxes.

"Funding has been cut down through the years and the roads are suffering. We have to put in place a plan to upgrade the road networks. Filling potholes is not the answer, we need proper restoration and resurfacing works, filling potholes in is only a short term solution."

Cllr O'Flynn also said that there are a lot of people living in poor conditions and with rent costs so high, there is a need for more social housing.

He told The Avondhu that he will also be fighting for family run businesses to have their rates reduced. Cllr O'Flynn said that he felt that rates could have been reduced in the last three budgets, but they weren't, so this will be a priority for him.

All of the councillors will struggle to come to terms with the size of the electoral area for Fermoy and Cllr O'Flynn said that he is looking forward to the challenge and will continue to look after his constituents. "My aim is to be there to help out communities and people in their hour of need. I don't make any promises, but to serve the people."
