Full planning permission has been secured to reopen the Carrickabrack Viaduct in Fermoy as part of a public walkway in the town.

The Avondhu understands that Avondhu Blackwater Partnership are now awaiting the release of funding to commence this project, which has been touted since 2013.

The former railway bridge was made famous in 1966 when it was featured in the First World War film, Blue Max, which starred George Peppard, James Mason and Ursula Andress.

Vice-Chairperson of Avondhu Blackwater Partnership, Frank O’Flynn, welcomed the recently secured planning permission for the project, which he described as a ‘large-scale and very exciting project’.

“We recently obtained full planning permission from Cork County Council, we’re now awaiting the release of funding for the project through LEADER and Cork County Council under the North Cork LCDC,” he said.

Shot in the autumn of 1965, the scene from Blue Max features a stunt pilot flying though the narrower eyes of the bridge during one scene. The bridge fell in disuse in 1967 after the Mallow to Waterford line ended.

“This is a large-scale and very exciting project,” added Cllr O’Flynn, “one that will be very beneficial to Fermoy and the surrounding areas in relation to attracting tourism into the area, as well as being a much-needed amenity for local residents. I’m hoping the funding will be secured shortly, it will be a major attraction in the town. It will serve as another added boost in the development of the Blackwater Valley as a tourism and recreation destination.”
