A second break-in to a local pharmacy in the space of a week, has seen gardai issue an appeal to the public for assistance in apprehending those responsible.

The comments of a garda spokesman in Fermoy last week, regarding pharmacies being targeted for break-ins in the run up to Christmas, have proved prescient with a second chemist shop in the area burgarised within a week of the first.

The Mari Mina Pharmacy in Rathcormac was broken into shortly after 3 am on Monday. It's understood one of the culprits, his face obscured by a hoodie, first approached the door and forced the lock, while another male waited in what has been described as a dark coloured five door car possibly an Audi or BMW.  The pair then ran into the pharmacy where they smashed a glass cabinet and made off with the cash drawer containing the shop float as well as nabbing Christmas stock, including an array of perfumes, gift-sets and jewellery. They were inside the premises for just minutes before they fled. Gardai believe they may have been disturbed.

GARDAI STUDYING CCTV

In a similar incident at Fermoy Medical Hall last week, a large quantity of perfume was also stolen. Gardai believe those responsible were in the vicinity for some time before they struck.

Gardai are studying CCTV footage in their investigation of the latest robbery.

Owner of the premises and the Mari Mina pharmacy chain, Akram Hanna, said robberies are becoming all too frequent and phamacies are seen as easy targets, especially coming up to the Christmas season. "It is unfortunate, as the pharmacy in Rathcormac provides an invaluable service to the people of the village and its environs and had stocked the shelves in preparation for a busy Christmas week."

The shop was back up and running a full service shortly after opening on Monday morning. The premises, which suffered flood damage in July 2012, is part of a large healthcare development in Rathcormac, including a doctor's surgery, a dentist and other retail units which are currently for let.
