Permission granted for Dairygold biomass plant

Conditional planning permission has been granted for a new biomass plant at Dairygold at Castle Farm in Mitchelstown, which will require over 40,000 tonnes of woodchip annually to run alongside a similar plant in Mallow.

The development will consist of a single-storey woodchip boiler building with a stack height of about 25 metres and is, say Dairygold, a part of their ‘decarbonisation road map’ for the business: the infrastructure will essentially replace gas-generated steam with woodchip-generated steam.

A similar plan is being developed for a biomass plant in Mallow. This steam is used to clean the plant and is used in the drying and evaporation of milk and whey products, but the change will not increase production and therefore there is no change to staff or personnel anticipated.
