Ballylanders 5 Castle Utd 0
The Limerick County and District Underage League got underway recently with three of our sides in action. Ballylanders U12s got their season off to a perfect start when they beat Castle Utd by 5 goals to nil at Castlepark on Saturday.
This game was closer than the scoreline suggests. Both sides had good early chances but defences were on top in the early exchanges. Sean Moloney put in a big performance leading Bally’s defensive line and he was ably assisted by Daniel and Patrick Holihan and Philip O’Sullivan.
Bally’ however always looked dangerous with Shane O’Donoghue repeatedly causing problems for Castle Utd down the left flank and he was well supported by his midfield partners William and Tom Fitzgerald and Cillian O’Brien. Meanwhile Rhys Fitzgerald and Shane O’Kelly put themselves about up front for Bally’.
The opening goal did not come until the 26th minute when Bally’ were awarded a free for a foul in the midfield area. The free kick was lofted in behind Castle’s defensive line and the ever-alert Shane O’Donoghue latched onto the dropping ball and fired home high to the keeper’s left.
Two minutes later William Fitzgerald made a driving run down the right before setting up Shane for another shot which was parried by Castle’s keeper only for Cillian O’Brien to fire home from close range to give Bally’ a 2-0 half-time lead.
Two big turning points came midway through the second half, Castle Utd’s striker looked certain to pull one back when he was through one on one with Bally keeper, Michael Cleary. Michael saved brilliantly from close range and his kick out found Shane O’Donoghue on the right this time and Shane drove through for a brilliant second goal.
Minutes later an almost identical situation, Castle through one on one again with the keeper, Micheal Cleary, again making an outstanding save and 20 seconds later Patrick Holihan having been set up by Shane coolly finished at the other end to put Bally four up.
Bally dominated the closing exchanges and it was no surprise when man of the match Shane O’Donoghue chipped the keeper to secure his hat-trick with minutes remaining. A great first day out for Bally’ U12s and along with Shane, Sean Moloney, William Fitzgerald and keeper, Michael Cleary, were outstanding on the day. A big day too for debut managers, John Connolly and Mairead O’Donoghue, who showed great tactical awareness.
Team: Michael Cleary, Patrick Holihan, Philip O’Sullivan, Sean Moloney, Daniel Holihan, William Fitzgerald, Cillian O’Brien, Tom Fitzgerald, Shane O’Donoghue, Shane O’Kelly and Rhys Fitzgerald. Subs: Luke Price and Nathan Coleman.
U14
Our U14s were at home to the same opposition and here it was a reversal of fortunes in both the result and also the scoreline. Bally’ were unlucky not to take the lead through Mark Faust in the first half, but Castle Utd who looked the stronger side throughout, eventually took control of this game in the second half.
Two quick-fire goals early into the second half caused the Bally’ heads to drop and in the end Castle Utd ran out 5-0 winners. Best for Bally’ in this game were Mark Faust, Cillian Lane and Danny Hayes.
Meanwhile an under strength U16 side went down to a heavy defeat away to Kilbehenny, Jordan Sheehy getting Bally’s only goal in this one
U10 BLITZES
The club has been in discussion with the league regarding U10 format for the 2013/14 season. We have proposed the holding of a series of blitzes at county venues rather than at UL, as it was last season.
We have offered to host the first of the boys’ U10 blitzes and we have also offered to host a girls’ blitz on the weekend of Oct 5th/6th. More on this once dates etc have been agreed with the league.
