A strong call for has been issued to Cork County Council to change the municipal bylaws and allow for people to be ‘named and shamed,’ if they persist in littering and allowing their dogs to foul public spaces.
Speaking with The Avondhu, Paul Kavanagh, project manager with Fermoy Tidy Towns who have made the call, acknowledged that while people had been fined for breaching littering legislation, more action needed to be taken in order to deter repeat offenders.
“There are always litter problems, but people cause those problems. People who do not carry bags for their dog’s poo; people who dump their bottles at the bottle banks…” he said, adding that these people should be ‘named and shamed’ if they continue to flout the law.
