OPW rejects claims of home flooding due to Fermoy scheme

The OPW says it fully sympathises with anyone whose home or property experiences flooding. However, the OPW rejects the suggestion in this case that this was as a result of the construction of flood defences in Fermoy

The OPW says it fully sympathises with anyone whose home or property experiences flooding. However, the OPW rejects the suggestion in this case that this was as a result of the construction of flood defences in Fermoy

Records from the OPW dating back to 1955 show that the flood of December 30th was the highest flood on record in terms of water level, while in terms of estimated flow, it was the second highest on record, the highest being on October 22, 1988.

These statistics were given to The Avondhu this week in response to claims by a gentleman that his home is ‘worthless’ and claims it is due to the flood relief scheme in Fermoy.

Paul Philpott, who lives three miles downstream of Fermoy, while admitting his house is on a flood plain, is calling on the OPW to put in place a policy to deal with the issue of downstream flooding when the barriers are in place in Fermoy during a flood.
