What a wonderful week it has been, what with such ideal weather, major success on the sporting front and a trouble-free St Patrick's weekend. As we laud the girls involved with Lismore's All-Ireland camogie win and Mike Ross for his mammoth contribution to Ireland's rugby success, we also pay tribute to the young people who were acknowledged at the North Cork Garda Youth Awards.

The immense courage, bravery and willingness that has been shown by these young people, sometimes to even put their lives on the line, is a credit to them. At a time when our youth are being criticised and picked upon, it is refreshing to see that and misdeeds we read and hear about are executed by a small minority.

Many of these young people's involvement in sport is to be encouraged and held up as a role model for their younger counterparts to emulate. One has to wonder though where children, who are so attached to smart phones, social media and computer games are heading, as much of this could be to the detriment of the more healthy active lifestyle to be found in sport and the outdoor world. Let us hope they can find a happy medium!
