National Bike Week gets under way on this Saturday (15th) and will run until the 23rd of June. This, the fifth year of Bike Week was launched by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister of State Alan Kelly.

Weeklong event includes a full and varied programme of free cycling events throughout the country. All of the events being organised promote cycling as an everyday way of getting around and actively encourage more people to cycle more often.

An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, said cycling is a wonderful way to keep fit and relieve stress, whether you use the bike to get to work or for leisure. “It is also a great way to see the Irish countryside and exploring our cycleways and back roads by bike is a really valuable addition to any holiday in Ireland,” he said.

Local bike shop owners are always on hand to provide advice on how best to choose a bike to suit your needs.

Minister Kelly said the aim of Bike Week is to celebrate cycling and get more people cycling. There are cycling events all over the country with a number of cycling clubs enjoying huge popularity in The Avondhu area alone. And even if you are not a club member, what could be better than getting together with your family and go for a leisurely cycle together at the weekend.

“Cycling has many positive benefits, particularly in improving health and fitness,” the Minister said.

“As a mode of commuting it is reliable and often quicker than a car trip. For teenagers a bike can give them independence. Cycling can be a very sociable pastime, with cycling clubs around the country offering help and advice to new cyclists.”

So whether you wish to go solo or as part of a cycling club or are one of the lycra clad Sean Kelly types, get out there and enjoy your bike!
