Unexpected icy roads on Monday morning caught many motorists unawares, as a number of cars spiralled out of control on black ice with at least five crashes reported in the local area within a matter of hours.

Three of these crashes occurred outside Corbett Court between Mitchelstown and Fermoy and two more in Kilworth and in Araglin later in the morning.

With a lot of rain the night before and dropping temperatures, motorists heading off to work on Monday morning and in a rush to arrive on time, were not expecting the hard frost and ice which greeted them on their routine drive.

Within hours, the routine and familiar drive was turned into a skating rink, as cars skidded, lost control and drivers battled against the elements to make it safely to their destination.

Mitchelstown and Fermoy Fire Brigade attended the scene of the first crash outside Corbett Court at 7am on Monday morning. It was a single vehicle road traffic accident where the car left the road and the female driver was attended to by ambulance personnel.

After this, both fire crews were called in different directions to attend the scenes of two further accidents.

The Mitchelstown brigade went to Kilworth, where a car had left the road and ended up in a wide deep drain. The female driver from this accident was taken to CUH.

Meanwhile, Fermoy were dispatched to Araglin just before 9am, where a car had gone into the ditch and a female driver had to be cut out of the vehicle.

While the fire crews from Mitchelstown and Fermoy were attending to these incidents, another two crashes occurred outside Corbett Court and these were attended to by the Gardai.

Unrelated to the bad weather, on Thursday last, January 16, there was also a crash between a lorry and car in Glanworth on the Ballyhooly Road, which is believed to have been attended to by the Gardai. No one suffered any serious injuries.
