Having just recently seen the successful revival of the Fermoy Area Sports & Community Awards in the Corrin Event Centre in 2014, The Avondhu’s edition of November 25th 1993 announced that year’s award winners. The winners were to be honoured at a function in The Grand Hotel where guest speaker was set to be Irish soccer team manager, Jack Charlton. Those honoured were: Sports - Billy McCarthy (GAA), Mary Meade (Grange Fermoy AC), Gearoid Towey and Garrett Hickey (rowing), Trevor Hickey (Castlelyons GAA), Brian Toomey (karate - best administrator); Dr Liam Donnelly (Moorepark - business enterprise), Fermoy Community TV Group (community award), Fermoy Image Improvement Group (environment award) and Tony Sheehan (special award).

There was a change of ownership at the well established Mitchelstown Cleaners, located on Lower Cork Street, Mitchelstown. Owners Chris and Michael Coughlan were handing over the reins to Shanballymore man, Eddie Fitzgerald, a well known sportsman in his locality, being heavily involved in Shanballymore GAA Club. Having spent 12 years in the dry cleaning business in Mallow, Eddie was realising his ambition of owning his own business.

It was reported that a charitable organisation were seeking to acquire the former Presentation Convent premises in Doneraile. The order had vacated Doneraile, breaking a 175 year association with the town, following the amalgamation of the two former secondary schools into Nagle Rice Secondary School in 1993. The Clare based Rural Resettlement Ireland organisation were displaying interest in the buildings and approx 3 acre site.

It was revealed that Mitchelstown Garda Station was to receive a replacement garda following the retirement of Garda Dan O’Shea. There had been fears in the town regarding further cutbacks at the station, following the reduction in hours earlier in the year, however it was reported that the replacement was a Garda Murphy, who was transferring to the post from Tallaght, Dublin.

The North Cork village of Castletownroche were announced as winners of the 1993 Cork County Muintir na Tire Litter Free Roadsides Awards, at a function in Jury’s Hotel, Cork. Winners of both the North Cork and county awards, they received a cheque for £100 and a prestigious trophy. As well as thanking the workers on the village’s FAS scheme, Nora Ahern, on behalf of the Castletownroche delegation, said their success was due to ‘the dedication of a few locals’. The awards were divided into two different categories, based on population centres of over 500 and under 500 - these were then sub-divided into each of the county council divisions, North, South and West. Killavullen took second place in their division.

Upwards of 500 people turned out in Anglesboro, enduring very cold but dry conditions, to witness the 100th anniversary celebrations of General Liam Lynch’s birth. Following a special Mass at the local church, celebrated by Fr Jim Allis from Tipperary (a relative of the general), a parade led by a colour party from 14th Batt FCA Limerick and both the Anglesboro and Castlelyons Pipe Bands, wound its way to the monument, nestled beneath the Galtee mountains. Following a wreath laying ceremony, there were speeches from Liam Lynch National Commemoration chairperson, Frank O’Flynn and Eamon Ó Cuiv TD. Some dignitaries in attendance included Gerard Collins TD, former Minister for Foreign Affairs; Deputies Michael Ahern, Michael Noonan, Ned O’Keeffe and Noel Davern; MEP Paddy Lane, along with Senators Billy Kelleher and Rory Kiely.

In sport - Following a 12 year lapse, Bride Rovers were East Cork junior B grade football champions, when defeating Glanmire by 4 points, 1-8 to 1-4, in the final played in Glenville - Batt O’Connell was the Rovers’ goalscorer. While ‘over the road’, Castlelyons U16 footballers celebrated winning the league title, adding to their championship title triumph, defeating Carrignavar 1-12 to 0-11 - an extra time goal by S O’Brien proving decisive. Meanwhile, Araglin hurlers defeated Ballyhooly in the Kenneally Cup junior hurling tournament, on an emphatic scoreline of 6-4 to 1-4; leading 4-4 to 0-2 at half-time, there was never any doubt about the final result, with a further 2 second half goals sealing victory. Araglin goalscorers - Tony Russell 2-0, with Michael Sheehan, Tony White, Derry O’Brien and Liam Carey also registering goals.
