North Cork scouter, Martin Flahive, who first joined the Scouts in Mitchelstown in the 1970s, received Scouting Ireland's highest honour recently, when he had his years of work and dedication recognised with The Order of Cu Chulainn award.
Martin is former North Cork County Commissioner, and Deputy Group Leader of the 44th Mallow Scout Group, he first joined the then Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland in the 70s in the 29th/30th Cork, Mitchelstown before moving to 24th Charleville.
He was also instrumental in re-opening the 44th Mallow Scout Group four years ago and three years ago, he passed the mantel of County Commissioner onto Doneraile Scouter Paudy O'Brien.
Paudy had seen first hand Martin's dedication and hard work and sought to have it recognised by nominating him for the Order.
By all who know him, Martin's opinions and experience are respected by all and Martin is known for always putting the young person first and is regarded as the ultimate problem solver.
Far from resting on his laurels Martin remains as active and enthusiastic a scouter as ever, helping to coordinate the scout section in North Cork. Martin works for pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline and lives in Ballincollig. The entire scouting family in North Cork Scout County wish to thank Martin for his selfless dedication to scouting in general, especially in North Cork, he remains a role-model, mentor and friend to young and old alike, a credit to scouting.
Martin received the prestigious award at the Scouting Ireland National Council in Sligo from Chief Scout of Ireland Michael John Shinnick.
The National Council saw more than 800 adults and young people travel to the conference from all over the country, where the governing body was elected.
For the delegates from North Cork, which covers Mitchelstown, Fermoy, Kilworth, Rathcormac, Glanworth, Mallow, Charleville, Buttevant, Kanturk, Doneraile and Boherbue, it was an extra special event, because of the surprise and honour which had been organised for one of their most senior members.
