Rumours about the condition of the bridge in Castletownroche have been causing serious concern locally in recent weeks. There was speculation that the bridge has suffered a serious crack, making it necessary for it to be closed for repairs.
The reports had caused alarm coming as they did just weeks after the major realignment works on the N72 had caused serious problems for area businesses who reported a decline in trade. Locals complained of being seriously hampered in their daily journeys by the long diversions.
Contacted by The Avondhu this week, Cork County Council scotched the rumours. A spokesman advised that they weren’t aware of any problem with the bridge. That news will come as a relief to area businesses and residents, particularly in light of the fact that the Ballyhooly to Fermoy section of the N72 is being closed for a further month to complete the road repairs along that section.
The road closed on Monday morning and was due to re-open on February 4th, however following a meeting with members of the community, the Chairman of Ballyhooly Community Council, north Cork area county councillors, a local business owner and the NRA and Cork County Council officials on Friday last an undertaking was given by the latter to try to have the works completed in two weeks.
