The Chair of Fermoy Town Council, Mayor Olive Corcoran, asked for a definite finish date for flood protection works at Ashe Quay from the scheme's senior engineer Ger Barry, at the recent meeting of the Fermoy electoral area of the county council which she attended as a guest.

The Mayor said she wanted to organise an event at Fermoy Community Youth Centre in January, but wouldn't do so if works were still ongoing adjacent to the centre at that time.

The engineer said he wasn't in a position to give an exact programme in relation to Fermoy Community Youth Centre but he assured her the majority of the remaining works such as walls and the boardwalk, will be done before Christmas.

"We will do the maximum amount of work we can do from the river to help with traffic management," he promised. "Access to the community centre will be maintained - it won't be closed," he stressed.

Cllr Noel McCarthy appealed to all to keep holding their events at the centre. Cllr Corcoran was insistent though that events there have been affected though she told the engineer she knew they were doing their best.

It will be April next year before the entire programme of works will be completed on Ashe Quay, he explained but the new toilet block, along with the walls and boardwalk will be done by December.

In his update on the works the engineer also advised that traffic flow will be maintained on Kent Street while they're working on an old stone culvert but there could be some disruption at times. A minimal amount of work is still to be done in Pearse Square but it's not expected to cause disruption.

The road surface on the N72 at the community hospital is being raised in the next two weeks. Traffic flow will however be maintained while the works are ongoing. A "fairly elaborate" diversion through Hawes Field will be put in place to maintain two-way traffic, he advised. Cllr Frank O'Flynn said 'well done' to the engineer on the completion of the Courthouse Road watermain works.
