A new carpark near Upper Cork Street in Mitchelstown is now being looked into by Cork County Council and it is believed that it could encourage more retailers and business people to occupy that end of the street.
At this week's Fermoy Area Electoral Committee meeting, Cllr Kevin O'Keeffe called on the council to open a public car park at James Street, saying that Upper Cork Street had become isolated without proper parking facilities.
"Upper Cork Street has become like a ghost street, there is a hive of activity from the Square to the library, but Upper Cork Street needs to have adequate parking spaces," he argued.
He argued that it would encourage new tenants to occupy some of the empty buildings in that part of the town and it would bring life back into that section of the town.
Cllr Frank O'Flynn added that the church car park is too far removed from the centre of town and off street parking must be provided.
While engineer Brendan O'Gorman made it clear that a site on James Street, near the Fire Station was too small for an acceptable car park, he revealed that it is an issue that they are actively pursuing and they are currently exploring lands in the vicinity, as well as other areas to progress the matter.
