The Paddy O'Keeffe Innovation Centre for the advancement of Irish Grassland and Dairying will be officially opened this Friday, 17 April at 11am at the Teagasc campus in Moorepark, Fermoy.

A total of €4.3 million has been invested in the centre which has been funded by FBD Trust and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. Present for the opening will be the EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Phil Hogan, EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Carlos Moedas and Minister for Agriculture, Food, the Marine & Defence, Simon Coveney TD.

The Paddy O'Keeffe Innovation centre will be used by the researchers, specialists and advisers involved in the delivery of the Teagasc Animal and Grassland, Research and Innovation programme, and in the delivery of part of Teagasc education programme. Specifically, it will support research on grassland, animal breeding and health and farming systems.

The new innovation centre was established with the generous support of FBD Trust and funding from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and is named after the late Paddy O’Keeffe, a pioneering farmer from Ballydague near Fermoy.

Paddy’s career spanned a period of great change in Irish agriculture, and his contribution was vitally important to the development of the Irish agricultural industry. As well as being a pioneering farmer, he was an agricultural journalist setting up the Irish Farmers Journal, a former Chairman of AFT, (the research organisation that preceded the formation of Teagasc), and a former Chairman of FBD insurance.

During his lifetime Paddy strongly supported the research programme at Teagasc Moorepark, constantly encouraging the development of new technology. Paddy’s commitment to education and research and the dissemination of information to the farming community was a constant over the decades.
