A new initiative entitled ‘I Wish’, aims to address the issues that face female students, their parents and teachers, when it comes to choosing subjects and making career choices in secondary school.

Speaking on the initiative, Gillian Keating, Cork Chamber president said: “There is a huge variety of exciting careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) sector, and having heard many times “I wish” I knew more about the opportunities for women in the world of science and technology or engineering and math from female students, mothers and teachers, we decided to tackle the issue head on”.

“So on the 12th February, throughout the city and county of Cork, there will be talks, demonstrations, interactive hubs where female secondary school students can meet, see and talk to inspiring women working in STEM roles across a huge variety of sectors.”

Medic and Channel 4’s Embarassing Bodies host, Pixie McKenna will open the ‘I Wish’ event at City Hall on 12th February. Female entrepreneurs will also provide extensive information on entrepreneurship in STEM as a career choice and showcase how women can excel in these roles.

COUNTY WIDE EVENTS

The brainchild of a number of female business leaders in Cork, ‘I Wish’ is being spearheaded by Gillian Keating, president of Cork Chamber, Caroline O’Driscoll, it@cork vice chair and Ruth Buckley, Head of IT at Cork City Council, and is supported by UCC, CIT and Cork County Council teams.

Students from all over the county can also avail of the I Wish events, which aim to include students from the entire Cork region.
