A new footpath is to be built between Fitzgerald Army Camp and Kilcrumper cemetery in Fermoy. Work is to start on it in February and it’s expected to be completed within about five weeks.

Senior council engineer Brendan O’Gorman, delivered the good news to Cllr Noel McCarthy at the monthly meeting of the Fermoy Electoral Area Committee on Tuesday afternoon after he asked if any progress had been made on the matter. It’s something that has been called for for many years by him and other councillors and townspeople.

The engineer told members that the work is being done by the county council in conjunction with various other parties including Avondhu Blackwater Partnership and FÁS, allowing the cost to be shared.

Cllr McCarthy hailed the news and thanked the engineer, saying it would mean people would be able to walk safely out to the cemetery.

Cllr Frank O’Flynn also welcomed the news and said the footpath would be an amenity too as the area is popular with walkers.
