National school education in the Grange area can be traced back to famine times (1840s). The building as we know it today came into existence in 1909/10 - in 2009 a new class room was added.
Located a short distance outside Fermoy on the road to Glanworth, the school has experienced tremendous growth in recent times. Like a lot of other schools in this situation, it had to go down the portacabin route which was a short term solution to the situation.
Following a major redevelopment, the portocabins have been dispensed with and the school now has 5 new classrooms and a substantial general purpose hall in addition to more office space. It's a huge advance for all concerned and on Saturday last the public had a chance to see the new extension.
Visitors were given guided tours of the school and all voiced their approval of the new-look format. The school, through its principal Catherine Reidy, the board of management and parents' association, have all welcomed the new facilities. Ultimately, the main beneficiaries are the pupils who can now look forward to being taught in more comfortable, bigger and better equipped surroundings.
