Fermoy Community Youth Centre is extremely fortunate to possess a beautiful, modern, fully seated theatre capable of hosting shows, plays and concerts.

The riverside youth centre started life as the Palace Hall in 1919 and taking inspiration from this name, the youth centre's theatre has been rebranded as the 'Palace Theatre'.

To mark the name change the centre hosted a very enjoyable reception last Friday night. An audience drawn from the artistic, cultural and political worlds were present to hear the centre's manager, Kieran Barry give a detailed account of the building's evolution from dance hall to multi-purpose theatrical, social and sports centre. He took a nostalgic look back at the performers who had graced the hall - performers such as the legendary Jimmy O'Dea.

He went on to pay generous tribute to The Palace Players who took their name from the building and entertained the masses from 1988 to 1995. He also referenced the major refurbishment in 1980, the recently installed heating system that cost €60,000 and the contribution of FAS to the centre's upkeep.

The re-named 'Palace Theatre' was officially launched by Kieran and his good friend and colleague, Liam Fenton who presently holds the title of President of Fermoy Musical Society - an extremely active group who continue to stage shows of an exceptionally high standard.

Following formalities, patrons were treated to an evening of music, song and dance. If everything goes according to plan this will be the first of many inspiring events in a setting that is now formally and officially the 'Palace Theatre' in Fermoy.
