Expanding its presence in the Irish market, BYD has increased its model line-up with the arrival of the new BYD SEAL U Super Hybrid, a plug-in hybrid SUV with intelligent BYD Super DM technology.
Representing a pivotal moment for the automaker, its arrival marks their ambition to enter the highly competitive hybrid segment after successfully establishing themselves with a top-five position in Irish EV sales as of September 2024 YTD.
Featuring a ‘DM-i’ drivetrain, the BYD SEAL U Super Hybrid is the first PHEV with BYD’s Super DM (Dual Mode) Technology in Ireland, with the “i” standing for intelligence. Providing an efficient, practical, and eco-conscious solution for daily mobility needs and long worry-free journeys, the BYD Seal U delivers a combined range of up to 1,080km and fuel consumption of 6.4 litres per 100km.
In addition, the BYD SEAL U Super Hybrid has a battery capacity of 18.3 kWh, an impressive all-wheel-drive acceleration of 0-100kph in just 5.9 secs, and the appeal of a Euro NCAP 5-star safety rating.
BYD Super DM Technology
Fast, powerful, and efficient, BYD SEAL U Super Hybrid works by prioritising electric power with minimal reliance on fuel, achieved by the Super DM (Dual Mode) Technology, developed exclusively by BYD.
When the battery is fully charged and switched to EV mode, the vehicle becomes pure-electric and when State Of Charge is low, it transforms into an ultra-low fuel consumption hybrid vehicle producing a quiet and comfortable drive.
An integral part of the BYD Super DM Technology package is a bespoke version of BYD’s acclaimed colbalt-free Blade Battery. Designed for the hybrid platform with power capacities ranging from 18.3 kWh and a pure-electric range of up to 80km, the Blade Battery comes with DC swift charging capability of 30% to 80% in just 35 minutes.
Their self-developed 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine is said by BYD to be the ‘world’s highest thermally-efficient petrol-driven engine’. With brake thermal efficiency of 43%, it boasts fuel efficiency that meets long-range emissions standards whilst having the additional benefit of a distinctly smooth and quiet driving experience. Its highly-integrated powertrain incorporates high-speed dual motors, dual controllers and advanced oil-cooling.
Described by Ciaran Allen, Sales Director at MDL, the Irish distributor for BYD, as: “cutting-edge technology that transforms the hybrid driving experience, BYD SEAL U Super Hybrid’s blend of environmentally friendly energy-efficiency and fuel economy combines all the benefits of electric driving, rewarding owners with real savings, quick and responsive acceleration, and exceptional drive comfort”.
Model Range
Two models make-up the new BYD SEAL U Super Hybrid range: Boost and Design. Prices for the entry-level Boost version are from €42,150 – now available through six main dealers: two in Dublin and one in Cork, Limerick, Waterford and Wexford.
Available in four body colours, its Ocean design and other embellishments give the BYD SEAL U a somewhat elegant appearance helped by aerodynamically designed 19-inch wheels to reduce drag. Headlights deliver a powerful beam echoed at the rear in a full-width taillights arrangement.
Inside, Oceanic Crystal gear levers and control buttons mirror its Ocean design exterior. Other focal points are its centre console with double-layer storage compartment, and rotatable touchscreen with connectivity and infotainment features.
Equipped with standard navigation and apps, 4G connectivity delivers advanced infotainment with intelligent voice control and online access to latest advancements.
Features include an electric sliding sunroof, air conditioning and purification, keyless entry, ambient lighting, noise and vibration reduction, advanced heads-up technology displaying critical data on the windscreen, and a cutting-edge sound system.
Comfortable multifunctional driver and passengers seats have electric adjustment and memory functions. A flat floor with generous legroom adds to its comfort and roominess. Its 425-litre boot expands to a spacious 1,440 litres.
Vehicle-to-load technology transforms it into a virtual power bank, creating numerous possibilities. At home it can be used to power household electrical devices. Outdoors, it can power a lawn mower, electric barbecues, and even TVs, all by plugging them into the vehicle.
In line with BYD’s high standards for passive and active safety across its model line-up, and coupled with the appeal of a Euro NCAP 5-star safety rating, standard safety features include Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Change Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.
