Some prominent businesses have shown an interest in moving into Mitchelstown and The Avondhu confirmed this week that the large chain, Subway have looked at a premises in the town.
While it is unknown whether or not Mitchelstown is somewhere that Subway will choose to locate, it is good news for the town that it is being considered.
Chairman of the MBA, Mark Waldron said that Subway is renowned for its popular lunch trade with both students and office workers, but he pointed out that while new businesses may be considering locating in Mitchelstown, others are still closing down and he thinks that parking is a big factor.
"The parking is killing businesses, recently, two hairdressers moved from Lower Cork Street, one closed down and the other relocated to Upper Cork Street. While they were there, there would have been three or four cars associated with the salon parked nearby throughout the day for appointments, but now that they are gone, the parking is still full," Mark said.
He said that if the parking problems continue and escalate, it will lead to the closure of businesses, and he added that the owner of Good Deals, which closed recently, said that parking was a huge problem for the business.
In recent days, there have been rumours that the UK chain of bar restaurants Wetherspoons would be moving into Paki Fitz's, which would be an ideal location, but there appears to be no basis to this as of yet. Just last month, it emerged that the company was looking at locations in Cork and Dublin, after it was announced last month that they plan to open up 30 pubs in Ireland.
