Following the overwhelming success of the Mitchelstown Musical Society's production of The Wizard of Oz, they are now looking forward to 2014, as they set the plans in motion for the next musical to take the town by storm.
At their recent AGM, another successful year was reported, as Chairperson Maria Murphy said that the full houses with The Wizard of Oz was thanks ot the cross community support for the show from the public, schools, businesses and other community groups.
She also thanked all of the society’s cast and committee members for their commitment and dedication, the Town Hall for its availability for rehearsals, the massive back-up team for organising props, costumes, front of house, stage management and even the families of members for their patience and understanding during the weeks running up to the February show, when all family responsibilities are set aside in favour of getting the musical on stage.
She made particular reference to the huge input from the professional team made up of director Catherine Mahon-Buckley, choreographer Kelly Ann Murphy, Musical Director Sarah Dewhurst and Musical Mistress Noreen Hellen.
"There are now over a hundred people involved in staging the musical," she said.
Secretary Mary Carolan recorded all of the activities the society and its members took part in, from raising funds at bagpacks, supporting Kool Christmas and looking after the younger cast members at rehearsals and auditions.
Treasurer Susan Griffin earned a huge sigh of relief when she reported a cash surplus for the year of €3,700 saying: "The society is on a sound financial footing, but with the cost of staging the musical at over €31,000 for the second year in a row, we have very little room to manoeuvre if we want to stage another colourful and exciting production next year."
The entire top table was re-elected unopposed with the full line-up for the coming year as follows: President Sean Chamberlain, Chairperson Maria Murphy, Secretary Mary Carolan, Treasurer Susan Griffin, vice-chair Michelle Cooke, assistant secretary Jim Flynn, assistant treasurer Siobhan Barry, PRO Ben Lynch and committee members Tony Ahern, Eileen Harrington, Therese Horgan, Jimmy Hennessy, Pat Lambe, Joe McMahon, Elaine Murphy, John Sheehan and James Sherlock.
Maria Murphy concluded the meeting by thanking all who attended and stating: "The immediate priorities for the incoming committee is the selection of a musical that will have broad, popular support from our community and a professional team that will bring top class entertainment to Mitchelstown in February 2014."
