Lismore 0-8 Newmarket-on-Fergus 0-5
The Lismore girls took the trip over the Knockmealdowns on Saturday last for the second time in the week in search of the Munster title in which they failed to claim in the week previously as both Lismore and Newmarket ground out a draw after extra time.
In the game in the week previously it was Newmarket who were out of the traps first and who dominated the play for the first twenty minutes, but the Lismore girls’ determination came back to draw the game at fulltime and again after extra time.
On Saturday last it was Lismore who were out of the blocks first and it was Johanna Houlihan who scored Lismore’s first point in the first minute of the game followed by another from Caithriona McGlone. Newmarket were finding it hard to get past the Lismore back line and failed to score from play. On the tenth minute Newmarket scored their first point from an Aine O’Brien free followed by another a minute later.
This was the first time that both sides drew level and indeed the only time for the remainder of the game. The Lismore girls closed down the Newmarket attack and fed long range balls into their forwards. Newmarket failed to capitalize on Lismore’s fouls, but the Lismore free taker Aoife Hannon was unerring in her free taking and scored 4 points from placed balls in the first half. Newmarket only scored 3 points in the half to Lismore’s 6 points.
The second half began with Lismores Aoife Hannon scoring a point from a free on the 3 minute. Newmarket were playing very determined camogie and were on the attack, but the Lismore backs stood firm and defended every ball that entered their zone. Aisling O’Brien pulled off three fine saves in this half which kept the Lismore girls in the game.
The Lismore girls’ determination kept defending only scoring two points in the half courtesy of Aoife Hannons placed balls and indeed Newmarket only scored two points from frees. The final whistle was blown ending the game on a scoreline of Lismore 0-8 Newmarket-on-Fergus 0-5.
Lismore were crowned Munster intermediate champions for a third time in 4 years. The player of the match trophy was awarded to Lismore’s Aisling O’Brien for her fine display in goal, while team captain, Shona Curran, lifted the ‘Trixie’ Toomey Cup.
