Munster LGFA were delighted to welcome the 6 counties to the launch of the Munster Senior and Senior B Championships, held in Mallow GAA Complex on Tuesday, April 15th.
This year’s competitions will again be run on a round robin format with each team facing off against each other to earn the right to contest the Munster final. Games will take place over three consecutive weekends, with a two-week break before the finals.
Speaking at the launch Munster LGFA President Robbie Smyth said he was really looking forward to the championship which “is looking like it’s going to be one of our best championships in a long long time” with four top quality teams taking part.
Both Munster Ladies Senior Football Championships commence on Saturday, April 26th, with finals taking place in Mallow GAA Complex on May 25th.
Senior Championship
Round 1 on April 26th sees Cork welcome the Kingdom to the Rebel County for their opening encounter, with Kerry on the hunt for back-to-back Munster titles having won the Senior Munster Championship last year.
Our second round 1 game takes place on Sunday, April 27th where Tipperary will host neighbours Waterford in a game that could go any way.
The second round sees Tipperary at home again, the opposition this time Cork, with Waterford welcoming reigning All-Ireland champions Kerry to the Déise.
The final round stage will decide on our final pairings, with Waterford and Kerry having home advantage.
Mr Smyth wished all the panels and their management teams the best of luck in the coming games, and we would hope that one of our teams will bring the All-Ireland Championship title back to Munster.
The Munster president also congratulated Kerry on their dominant performance and fabulous win over Armagh in the Division 1 Lidl National Football League final held in Croke Park last weekend. Commiserations to Cork who are a very young team who were up against top opposition Galway in the Division 2 final. This team is building and congratulations on moving up to Division 1 next year.
Senior B Championship
The Munster Senior B Championship structure and dates follow our Senior championship and this year we are delighted to have 4 teams – Limerick, Kerry, Clare and Cork – competing and developing their players in the campaign. This is the 3rd year of this competition, which is proving to be vital in the development of players from club to county standards, with Senior B panel members being drafted onto Senior county panels.
Mr Smyth concluded by wishing everyone an enjoyable evening and best wishes with the games ahead.
