WEEK 27: MONDAY, 29th JUNE - SUNDAY, 5th JULY

We have 10 winners combined to report on from Avondhu area locals based in the UK, with Fermoy native David O'Meara, again dominating with 6 winners. Kilworth native, Martin Lane; Castletownroche native Jonjo O'Neill; Fermoy native Maurice Linehan and Killeagh native Liam Keniry, all had a winner apiece. Our combined winners tally for 2015 now stands on 264.

'MOVE IN TIME' ONE OF SIX FOR O'MEARA

Fermoy native and trainer David O'Meara, continues to bag winner after winner and recorded no less than six winners in Week 27. His most notable stable success came with the David Nolan ridden, Move In Time (4/9f), who took the 4 runner Soba Conditions Stakes (C3), over 5f, at Hamilton on June 30th last.

Returning to the track after an extended break, this Group 1 winning seven year old gelded son of Monsieur Bond, stripped fit and ready for purpose with sights aimed high for the season ahead. With the field cutting up to four runners, quality rather than quantity was the order of the day, with Tangerine Trees inclusion making it two Group 1 winners of the Prix l'Abbaye lining up at the start.

Slow to stride and a little ring rusty, Move In Time quickly tagged onto the field, running last in a diamond formation up the centre of the track behind early pacesetter, Tangerine Trees. Travelling well within himself to halfway, Move In Time was produced through the centre of runners right on the two furlong marker and in a matter of strides, he had quickened effortlessly away from this field. Asked to go on about his job by Nolan, this Reg Bond and Partners owned gelding, responded generously to riding and in the end won readily by three and a half lengths from Addictive Dream back in second.

Recording his 8th win in total, Move In Time may now be aimed at the Group 2 King George Stakes at Goodwood on July 31st, before taking in the Group 1 Nunthorpe at York, on August 21st. All roads will then hopefully lead back to Paris and the defence of his l'Abbaye crown. Andrew Turton, part-owner, went on to say: “We've kept Move In Time for the second half of the season. That was the perfect start.”

O'Meara went on to record another five winners and those were in date order: Ingleby Hollow (14/1) who scored under Graham Gibbons in the 8 runner Wayne Conway Memorial H'cap (C5) over 12f at Pontefract on June 29th last. This three year old gelded son of Beat Hollow, was breaking his maiden tag at the eighth attempt.

Rex Imperator (9/2) who took out the 8 runner Farmhouse Cheshire H'cap (C3) over 6f under David Nolan at Thirsk on July 1st. This was the six year old's first win since taking the Stewards Cup almost two years ago. Birdman (4/5f) who went on to win the 5 runner Float Glass Industries H'cap (C3) over 8f under Ryan Moore at Haydock on July 2nd. Winning off a mark of 93, this five year old gelded son of Danehill Dancer, has now won 6 of his 25 turf starts and 7 in total.

Also, King Torus (5/4) who won the 5 runner Betdaq Claiming Stakes (C5) over 8f under Silvestre De Sousa at Doncaster on July 3rd last. Recording his first win since last July over the same course, this seven year old gelded son of Oratorio, was winning his 11th race in total from 41 starts.

O'Meara completed an across the card double at Beverley on July 3rd, with the David Nolan ridden Thankstomonty (10/3), who is no longer a maiden after taking the 6 runner Swan Industrial Drives H'cap (C5) over 8.5f. O'Meara now sits on the 62 winner mark for 2015 and has 69 winners for the season.

SECOND WAITS AND BREEZES PAST ZEPHRY

Castletownroche native and trainer Jonjo O'Neill, teamed up with fellow Avondhu man and Fermoy jockey Maurice Linehan, to take the 7 runner Worcester News Conditional Novices' H'cap Hurdle (C4), with Wait A Second (4/1), over 20f at Worcester on July 1st.

Coming in to this race off a good Warwick second, in softer ground conditions, this home bred five year old gelded son of Scorpion, was making his handicap debut off an opening mark of 113 in first-time cheekpieces. Jumping off handy in third position and a little keen down over the first, Wait A Second was settled nicely by Linehan as the early lead was taken by Spring Steel. With the gallop looking steady down over the first four flights of hurdles and with little change in the order going out on the final circuit, Spring Steel increased the tempo on the long run to the fifth hurdle.

Always stalked by Zephyr in second, Spring Steel started to feel the pinch on landing over the sixth, while Linehan and Wait A Second were noted travelling smoothly in third. Down over the fourth last and Zephyr took the lead off a tiring Spring Steel, with Wait A Second moving swiftly and menacingly into second. Turning to face the final three hurdles in the home straight, Linehan made his move, coming upsides Zephyr going ominously well. Held onto for as long as possible and with Zephyr somewhat hanging right into him, Wait A Second landed over the last with questions waiting to be asked.

Strong as usual in the saddle, Linehan garnered every ounce of latent ability out of Wait A Second, who ridden out, went on to outstay Zephyr up the long run-in by three-quarters of a length.

Recording his first win, this J P McManus-owned gelding, was bred by McManus's wife Noreen and so this win was all the sweeter. A half brother to Listed placed chaser, Rate Of Knots also trained by O'Neill and owned by McManus, Wait A Second, still looks a big raw individual and I'd imagine he'll be groomed into a staying chaser next season all going well. O'Neill was training his 19th winner of the season and Linehan was riding his 2nd seasonal winner. Maurice Linehan, speaking to The Avondhu said: “Wait A Second travelled well and needed a bit of help to win.”

In further news, it was confirmed last week that jockey, Barry Geraghty, will take over the position of retained rider to owner JP McManus, effectively replacing retired champion Tony McCoy. He took his first rides back from injury after three months at Limerick last Sunday.

RETRO BACK IN WINNING GROVE UNDER LANE

Kilworth native and flat jockey Martin Lane, rode his 28th winner of 2015, aboard the David Dennis trained, Retro Valley (9/2) who went onto take the 6 runner, Brit Global Speciality H'cap (C5) over 12f at Brighton on June 30th last. Coming here off the back of an ordinary run at Windsor last time out and having his 13th run of 2015, this three year old gelded son of Vale Of York, was having his first Brighton start with Lane also aboard for the first time.

Knowing the horse sulked last time out, Lane was anxious to sit handy off a steady early pace set by The Holyman. Uphill on this rollercoaster track, Retro Valley travelled well within himself to the halfway point moving smoothly into third passing Wilson Avenue. With the pace lifting fully four furlongs from home, the field swung off the home turn bend with Duke Street briefly challenging and passing The Holyman for the lead. None went as well as Lane and Retro Valley and he came there full of intention over two furlongs out.

Dispatching Duke Street in a matter of strides, Lane got busy once hitting the front and ridden strongly, this Favourites Racing-owned gelding responded in bucket loads, staying on relentlessly to win, going away by some three lengths from Kitten's Re, back in second. Recording his third win on this, his 17th start, Retro Valley still looks to be improving with racing and kept very busy, he went in here off a mark of 68, 10lb higher than his last winning mark of 58 back in May.

Lane was riding his second winner for Dennis from just 10 rides and not many jockeys ride Brighton better than the Kilworth man. He has now ridden 17 winners there in the last few seasons with an almost 50 point profit to 1 unit stakes. Retro Valley seems to thrive on racing and fast ground is right up his street. All his three wins have now come with firm in the going description and it would be no surprise to see him go in again. He also looks as if he would stay further than 12f and holds a Chester entry on July 10th next.

TAHITI WON FROM WAYWARD GURU

Killeagh native and flat jockey, Liam Keniry, registered his 27th winner of 2015, aboard the Tony Carroll trained, Tahiti One (12/1), who took the 6 runner Avensys Selling Stakes (C6), over 6f, at Lingfield Park (AW), on July 2nd last.

Having only her second start and returning to Lingfield after a well beaten debut on the turf track, this two year old Bertolini filly, was upped in trip and dropped in class, in the hope of improvement. Drawn widest of six, Tahiti One was slow to stride and had to be roused early by Keniry to the first bend, five wide to the outside, as race favourite, I T Guru, took the early initiative.

From a steady looking pace Keniry made a bold move left and found himself from the widest position to right down the inside rail. With the pace hotting up entering the home turn, I T Guru and Richard Hughes swung wide off the turn letting Freddie Freeloader take a default lead with Tahiti One now ready to pounce up the inner. Ridden to challenge Freddie Freeloader well inside the two pole, Tahiti One hit the front nearing the one furlong marker and ridden out, she withheld the late rally of the wayward I T Guru close home by three-quarters of a length.

Recording her first win, this Seasons Holidays Ltd owned filly, looks to have come on a tonne from her debut and should with maturity continue to improve. A first foal for her dam, Club Tahiti, who herself was a good 2yo winner and half sister to Group 3 winner, Clowance and useful flat performer, Keys, who is also in the care of Worcester based trainer, Carroll.

Combined UK flat/jumps 2015 = 264.
