Work is finally to be carried out in the coming weeks to a four year-old water leak in Kilworth at Araglin Bridge.

One resident told The Avondhu that the problem has been ongoing for four years and while it appeared to be a minor problem, health and safety issues were cited to be standing in the way of repairs.

A spokesperson for Cork County Council told The Avondhu this week that a watermain is strapped to the inside of the bridge and an air valve, at the highest point of the bridge, is leaking.

"It is a minor leak, but it appears a lot worse than it is, as there is a spray from the air valve," the spokesperson told The Avondhu.

Addressing whether or not health and safety concerns were hampering repair efforts, the council confirmed that in order to repair the valve, they would need to drop a plumber down over the river in a basket attached to a crane, as the repair cannot be carried out from below.

"There are overhead high voltage power cables, which will also have to be turned off by Eirgrid in order for the crane to work safely.

"This work was planned earlier in the year and arrangements had been made with Eirgrid to switch off the power lines, but because of all the bad weather, Eirgrid were not in a position to switch off the power. It is now hoped to have this repair carried out in the coming weeks," the council spokesperson added.

This is light at the end of the tunnel for residents who had expressed their concern over the wastage of water and feared that the leak would not be fixed 'in their lifetime'.
