The appeal of diecast models (miniature tractors, cars and other machines) seems to be growing, going on the very substantial crowds that visited the 'modelmania' show in Mitchelstown at the weekend.
Mitchelstown Business Park at Cahir Hill was the venue for this extensive event that attracted enthusiasts from all over Ireland and beyond. The venue was ideal as it afforded exhibitors the generous space they need to display their wares.
Tractors continue to be the 'big seller' in the world of diecast, however, manufacturers are always broadening the market and visitors were treated to some excellent examples of racing cars, trains, boats and excavating equipment. Remote control vehicles were also to the fore with lots of exciting demonstrations to keep the public entertained.
In a new departure for main organiser, Kevin O'Brien and his team, they successfully secured the attendance of plant hire businesses who used the car park to showcase their machinery - some of which were enormous.
Judging by the number of people carrying goods exiting the exhibition, sales were brisk, with several availing of the opportunity to pick up items that may not be readily available in December.
Regardless of how attached a collector is to a replica, every model has a price and according to the show organisers, there's always someone out there willing to pay top dollar for a desirable piece. Heretofore a pursuit for boys (and big boys), more girls and women are now involving themselves in the world of diecast models.
The event was smoothly run with plenty of stewards to keep tabs on traffic and parking arrangements. Outside of the static demonstrations you had bouncy castles, refreshment tents and video displays to keep all age groups entertained. In summary, a very lively, colourful and busy day out that certainly struck a chord with the public.
