Mitchelstown woman appointed a judge

Mitchelstown woman Helen Boyle has this week been appointed a judge of the circuit court during a ceremony on Wednesday.

Ms Justice Boyle, originally from Church Street, was sworn in at an event in Dublin – her parents Bernie and Joe as well as other family members were there for the occasion. Bernie well known in the town due to her time teaching at the Bunscoil.

Ms Boyle graduated with a law degree from University College Cork and the University of Leiden 1993. She also studied at the University of Edinburgh in 1994 was called to the bar in 1996.

She is well known in Cork legal circles and had been working as a barrister in the Circuit Criminal Courts.  

Judge Boyle will replace Ms Justice Susan Ryan who retired in January. 

The appointment is one of a number of senior legal officers by the Government to the Court of Appeal, High Court, Circuit Court and District Court. Mr Justice Donald Binchy will work at the Court of Appeal, Colm Roberts will take up a post at the District Court and Senior Counsel Paul Burns was appointed to the High Court.
