Everyone knows that you need three or more servings of dairy a day for healthy bones and teeth, yet many of us regularly forget to get enough into our daily diets.

The Transition Year students at Presentation Secondary School in Mitchelstown set about trying to remedy this in their school and now they are hopeful that they will get through to the final stage of the Milk It competition, which could see the students become part of a nationwide promotion of dairy products, in conjunction with TV3 and the National Dairy Council.

On Valentine's Day, while many were busy scoffing chocolates and smelling the sweet scent of roses, the students ran an 'I RDA You' challenge in the school canteen, as part of their Milk It 2014 campaign.

Their home economics teacher, Ms McKenna, explained that the Dairy Dogooders - Maeve Lewis, Jamie King, Ciara Leonard, Shauna Fox, Annette O'Donnell and Bridget Myers - served 250ml of milk to both staff and students to encourage people to strive for their Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of dairy.

The group sailed through the first stage of the competition with their 'Pitch It' video and they hope that recent school events, such as the 'The Milk Shake It Awards' (a lip-dub to Macklemore) and the instalment of dairy fact centres around the school, will help them to get through to the final stage.

They are currently among the top 100 schools and at the end of March, a shortlist of twenty national finalists will be announced. The national finals will take place in Dublin on May 15.
