A sixth class pupil from Bunscoil na Toirbhirte, Mitchelstown, Mary Brooks last week was crowned the Cork Spelling Bee champion, beating off stiff competition and she is now busy preparing for the provincial final in early June.

The county final for the Eason Spelling Bee competition took place in Grange in Cork City and the principal of the Bunscoil, Ms Kayren Hayes Brennan, said that at the initial stages, there were 55 competitors from Cork and Mary successfully made her way through each round without faltering, before coming head to head with another girl in the final round.

"Mary emerged as the winner in a nail-biting finish. All in the Bunscoil are very proud of her achievement."

Mary will be representing Cork in the provincial final and her ultimate goal is to be crowned 2013 Eason Spelling Bee champion.

This is the third year of the Spelling Bee, which is a fun way to encourage primary school children to enjoy spelling - this year saw a record number of entries from across the country.
