Mitchelstown is still trailing in the league table in their category in Cork County Council’s anti litter league challenge league table. The town did manage to increase points by 54.9 from 788.5 in stage one to 843.4 in stage two but it wasn’t enough to lift it out of the bottom place in the category.
Fermoy on the other hand dropped points in stage two in its category, decreasing from 967.5 in stage one to 915.6, a slip of 51.9 points.
Mitchelstown’s total now stands at 1,631.9 while Fermoy is coming in at 1883.1, putting it in fourth place in its category.
“We’re thrilled to have improved. A great effort is being made,” Kay Dawson of AROMA in Mitchelstown told The Avondhu. She said the Tús scheme has played no small part in helping bring their marks up. She paid tribute to Sean Finn who co-ordinates the Tús scheme on behalf of the community council, the community council itself and the local office of Cork County Council whose combined efforts have helped.
Conceding that they still had a ways to go, she appealed to people not to drop litter as, she said, money spent on cleaning up litter and discarded rubbish could be better spent on other projects that would enhance the town.
Chairman of Fermoy Tidy Towns anti-litter committee John Murphy said the drop in points was a disappointment. “Once again I’d appeal to everyone to make a big effort, to do their bit. We were up there before, we can be again but we need to work together,” he said. Cigarette butts continue to be a problem, he pointed out.
Results for the third and final stage of the competition will be announced at the awards on September 5th.
