With the sheriff having quit the town, the parking situation in Mitchelstown has well and truly gone to the dogs - and the locals are complaining. That said, when the traffic warden was in situ, there were plenty of complaints too - after all, there are those of us who don't like being told where we can and cannot park.

The notion of pay parking, however small the fee, didn't seem to cut the ice. Understandably, there is the fear, that any charge could kill off the already limited amount of trade that town centre still enjoys.

The recent experience in Fermoy of free parking in the off-street car parks is working well according to local traders there. While there is still a charge for on-street parking, motorists don't seem to mind paying for that priviledge.

While much of the Mitchelstown problem seems to be down to workers and business owners parking on the main street, it must be also said that others simply choose to abandon their vehicles on double lines, on the traffic-calming rumble strips - in fact, anywhere they can find 'a gap', safe in the knowledge that they are not under the cosh of the warden. To be successful, any system will need to be monitored, so the message seems to be 'bring back the traffic warden'!
