After unprecedented delays, it was confirmed this week that Mitchelstown Leisure Centre will be open by the end of October.

The complex was due to open much sooner, but was delayed due to a hold up with the grant which led to the builders not being paid. Ben Lynch confirmed to The Avondhu this week that the grant problems have been sorted and they will now proceed with getting the building ready for the public.

"The grant from the Department of Environment which was expected earlier this year, has finally been cleared for payment and this will discharge the debt due to the builders.

"We received approval for this grant in July 2013 and have been trying to get the funds drawn down since December. We fully expected to have the cash well before the builders finished in the summer, but the Department raised further issues at the last minute, which have only been resolved at this late stage," Ben said.

He pointed out that the delays resulted in the community being denied the facilities of the leisure centre for the past three months, but he is delighted and relieved to be finally looking forward to the opening of the complex.

Manager Kristine Meenaghan, said they are now looking forward to what the complex will be able to offer to the people of Mitchelstown.

"This is a fantastic facility that everyone in Mitchelstown will be able to enjoy. We're all looking forward to offering a wide range of classes and programmes from opening day.

"Equipment has been on order for some time and we'll have most of it installed as soon as we get the keys. Because of the delays, we've decided to hold back on opening the fitness suite for four to six weeks, so we can iron out any teething problems, but that too will be fully operational well before the end of the year," she explained.

More details about the opening of the leisure centre will be provided in the coming weeks.
