The Mitchelstown Leisure Centre in the Canon's Field is now taking shape, the steel frame was erected recently and it looks as if the completion target of June 2014 is well within sight.

Chairman of the leisure committee, Ben Lynch said that MMD are well on target to meet the deadline.

"They told us there would be a noticeable difference in the appearance of the site by the end of October and they’ve certainly achieved that. The sports hall, located at the lower level of the site is clearly identifiable and the community facilities at the next level have also taken shape over the past week or so," he said.

As the committee want to avoid borrowing any money for the project, the old peppermill building on Upper Cork Street and two houses on Convent Hill have gone up for sale, as the proceeds will hopefully be used for the fit out.

"We’ve always had the wish to avoid any borrowings on the building and we have enough money to do that through the funds we’ve retained over the years and the grants from the Sports Capital Programme (National Lottery) and Ballyhoura.

"But, we’ll need every euro we can lay our hands on for equipment to finish the job, so we took the decision to place the properties for sale. We’re also still searching around for any other grant support that might become available so if your readers know of any such source of funding we’d be delighted to hear from them," Ben told The Avondhu.

He added that with the good progress on the building works to date, 2014 promises to be an exciting year for Mitchelstown with the opening of the Leisure Centre and other developments like the enterprise centre and the recently announced investment by Dairygold.

"Mitchelstown will need to make progress on other fronts too, but there are a lot of positives out there, not just the negatives of the past decade," Ben said.
