With 43 households in Skeheenarinky on a 4-year boil water notice, Minister for Agriculture, Food and Marine, Tom Hayes, is confident that the Environment Minister, Phil Hogan, will grant an exemption from water charges, for residents affected by the notice.

People living in the 43 homes and the school with 49 pupils are all on a boil water notice because of Cryptosporidium, which was found in their local water supply.

The homes affected are mainly in Skeheenarinky, near Cahir, served by the Burncourt water scheme, which was allocated funding for major upgrade works before Christmas.

Until such time as those works are completed, Minister Hayes has requested that each home, which has been given a boil notice be exempt from water charges.

Speaking on the matter, Minister Hayes said: "I have spoken to Minister Phil Hogan on the issue and he has described my request as perfectly reasonable, he is expected to announce the exemption as part of the plans for water charges."

He added that he felt it was important to put this request to the Minister, as it is not fair to expect these home owners to pay for water, when their water is not only unusable, but also extremely unhealthy.

"It’s also important that work on the scheme which was announced in early December, gets underway as soon as possible to alleviate the unnecessary hardship being faced by these home owners who are forced to constantly either boil water or buy bottled water," he added.
