Following the announcement that €0.61 million has been approved for the Conna water supply scheme, Minister Sean Sherlock is now urging Cork County Council to act quickly and appoint a contractor so that the work can begin as soon as possible.

The funding was approved by Minister Phil Hogan under the Department's Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2013.

The news has been warmly welcomed by Sean Sherlock who said that the water has been causing serious problems for the people of Conna.

“This is an issue that has been causing significant concern to residents of Conna and it is very positive that the funding is now approved so work can proceed effectively. The water supply to Conna village has traditionally been provided by local boreholes pumping into a small reservoir with limited storage which resulted in disruption of supply.

"Under the Conna Regional Water Supply Scheme Phase 1 (Reservoir), Cork County Council propose to provide a new reservoir and upgraded distribution system to serve Conna village from the existing Regional Water Supply Scheme," the Minister said.

He also told The Avondhu, he is confident that the works will secure the supply for Conna and safeguard the quality of drinking water.

“I would urge Cork County Council to act swiftly and appoint the contractor following the formalities of the tender process, which is already underway, so work can begin as soon as possible,” said Minister Sherlock.
