In an age where many people under the age of 30 would turn to the internet for an answer before they would talk to a friend or family member, mental health is more important than ever - starting this week, The Avondhu will be running a series of articles over the coming weeks, looking at young people and their attitudes towards mental health.

Our 'Mind Yourselfie' series, by Journalist Sandra Quinn, analyses local survey results from students in The Avondhu catchment area, carry extensive interviews on mental health services and supports, give tips on how to study and relieve stress, while inviting comments and feedback on the topic from our readers.

Journalist Sandra Quinn surveyed 616 students from across schools in Mitchelstown, Fermoy, South Tipperary and South Limerick posing questions about their perceptions of mental health, who they would turn to if they were going through an issue related to their mental health and whether or not they think mental health issues only affect people of a certain age.

The survey, undertaken by The Avondhu, revealed that 69% of students felt that their school provided adequate mental health support, but just 2% of those would talk to a teacher if they were feeling down or troubled about something. A third of students would talk to a parent, family member of friend.
