Kite flyers and kite fans will be blown away at the exciting line-up for the upcoming Kitefest in Millstreet Country Park, in aid of Breakthrough Cancer Research this Sunday, September 22. The event is the brainchild of Fermoy woman, Joanie Hanley who is herself currently recovering from cancer.

It's just been announced that the Kites Ireland team will stage a show-stopping kite demonstration as part of the event. The team will exhibit their superb kite flying talents with freestyle, stunt and dual line kites, showcasing sport kite flying, precision kite flying and multiple kiting (piloting two to three kites with between four and six lines simultaneously).

Kite enthusiast Andrew Beattie will also travel from Scotland to fly his impressive display of huge kites. The breathtaking exhibition includes Manta Ray Kites running 30m from nose to tail, a pack of three tigers pawing the sky and a school of fish swimming through the air. In addition to the demonstrations, there will be lots of family fun at KiteFest, from flying your own kite, to a kite-making workshop, a pipe band, bouncy castle, face painting, colouring competitions and much more.

SUPPORT FOR GOOD CAUSE

The sky’s the limit for the fun people will have and the amount to be raised for cancer research. Preparing for the event this week, Joan said: “Flying kites brings me solace and hope for a brighter future. I want to share that feeling with others, and in doing so help to raise money for a charity that is dedicated to saving lives, and close to my own heart, Breakthrough Cancer Research. We have lots of activity lined up for the day, so we hope everyone comes out to show their support.”

Millstreet Country Park, in support of the event, will donate 100% of the €20 per car entry fee to the Park on Sunday, 22nd September to Breakthrough Cancer Research to help fund groundbreaking research into new treatment options for poor prognosis cancers at Cork Cancer Research Centre.

Orla Dolan, fundraising director of Breakthrough Cancer Research said, “We are extremely grateful to Joanie for her dedication in organising such a fantastic event. She is an inspiration to everyone, so make sure you pop down on the day and say hello to her. The event would also not be possible without the support of Millstreet Country Park who have generously donated the full use of their magnificent 500 acre park free to us on the day, so we wish to also warmly thank them for their support. It’s this support from Joanie, Millstreet Country Park, and members of the public that enables us fund research into new treatments for poor prognosis cancers, five of which have already been brought to clinicians throughout the country."

Millstreet Country Park is the perfect setting for a KiteFest as it offers an idyllic escape in the breathtaking setting of an Irish wilderness; a mix of blanket bog land, upland and lowland arboretum, mixed woodlands, wildflower meadows, groves, gardens, cascading rivers and lakes. It has beautiful themed gardens, waterfalls, lakes, a wishing well, a Crannóg, amazing view points, a 200 acre deer farm, 12 miles of walking trails and many new cycling trails, so, apart from the kiting activity, there’s much to do for all the family.

The event will run from 1 to 5pm with activities commencing at 2pm and all are warmly welcomed.
