The medieval town of Kilmallock provides the atmospheric backdrop to Soulscapes, a series of talks to be held at Friars’ Gate Theatre during the month of November. This festival will feature contributions from some of Ireland’s most thoughtful and respected thinkers including author Michael Harding, Dr Sile de Cleir of the University of Limerick; the Very Rev Gary Paulsen, Dean of Killaloe and writer and UlFrank McCourt chair, Joseph O’Connor.
On each Wednesday, Friars’ Gate will host four rich evenings for the mind and spirit that will inspire, uplift and entertain and challenge. People are encouraged to attend the whole series and enjoy the full gamut of experiences that is on offer over the four evenings which commence at 8pm. The genesis of SoulScapes has come out of the difficult and challenging times Ireland now finds itself in.
Soulscapes opens on November 5th in Friars' Gate with an evening entitled 'Hanging with the Elephant' with Michael Harding. Michael is the author of six plays and has lived a life of writing, reading acting and talking. A chronicler of ordinary life in midland Ireland through his column in the Irish Times, no one was more surprised than he when he was struck down with a depression in the summer of 2012. His subsequent record of recovery, the multi-award winning book, Staring At Lakes, brought him to a whole new level of engagement with audiences throughout the country. Hear him speak with openness, honesty and great wit on how he continues to attempt to tame the ‘elephant’ – an Asian metaphor for the unruly mind.
On the second evening November 12th, we welcome the Very Rev Gary Paulsen, Dean of Killaloe whose talk will be entitled 'Created in God’s Image'. Rev Paulsen is a native of 'Athlone' in the Western Cape near Cape Town, South Africa and has been based in Killaloe since 2011.
'Narrating the Unknowable: aspects of the supernatural in Irish Storytelling' is the intriguing title of the third Wednesday talk by noted academic Dr Sile De Cleir, University of Limerick.
Author Joseph O’Connor will deliver the final talk on Wednesday, November 26 entitled 'Love as Creativity: A Reflection for Advent'. Joseph O’Connor is the author of eight novels, his most recent being The Thrill of it All. His novel, Star of the Sea, was an international bestseller, selling more than a million copies and being published in 38 languages while his Ghost Light was chosen as Dublin’s One City Book novel for 2011. In 2014 Joseph was appointed Frank McCourt Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Limerick.
Tickets can be booked at Friars Gate Theatre 063-98727. Tickets are €10 per evening (€35 for four evenings). Full information is available on www.friarsgate.ie.
