Medical herbalist Margaret Noonan is joining the practice of Dr Joseph Keane at The Bridge Clinic, Church Place in Fermoy.

Margaret, a native of Ballyduff Upper, has studied herbal medicine fulltime for six years and pharmaceutical chemistry for four. She combines western medicine with traditional and natural medicine.

Herbal medicine, using plants and plant extracts in the treatment and prevention of sickness and disease, which has been used in Ireland and the world for thousands of years, has a popular following.

"In the developed world today we face challenges such as pollution, long-term stress, drug resistance and side effts so it's not surprising that more and more people look to the benefits of herbal medicine," Margaret explains.

She says herbal medicine is appropriate for most conditions for which a person would visit their GP and can be used alone or in conjunction with another form of treatment.

"Illnesses that respond well to herbal treatment include IBS, constipation and digestive problems, headaches and migranes, depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances, stress and emotional issues, asthma, sinusitis and recurrent infections, poor circulation, hormonal imbalances, musculo-skeletal aches and pains and skin problems among others," Margaret points out.

The herbal prescription is a blend of liquid herbs which can be combined with herbal tea, capsules or cream. "No two patients are alike, even if they appear to be suffering similar symptoms, so no two prescriptions are exactly the same," Margaret says. She also discusses lifestyle choices and gives advice on nutrition and supplements during consultations.

"Herbal medicine will play an increasingly important part in our personal healthcare programme," Margaret believes. As such, she's well placed to serve the local community!
